Eihei Dogen Study Group

Beginning August 4th we are studying the Tenzo Kyokun. As Tenzo in the Tassajara kitchen I could see in myself and others how demanding and humble labor - tasks of daily life - can deepen a wise and compassionate heart. The vegetables in the dustpan at the end of the day are as beautiful as those in the pot of soup, and our own right effort reveals this. The Tenzokyokun is Dogen’s first essay in his collection of monastic regulations, or Shingi. While the essay refers to the daily efforts of the monastery kitchen manager, it is widely studied for its teachings on the functioning of practice in daily life as an expression of a joyful, nurturing and magnanimous mind.
