About Treasure the Road Study Groups

Treasure the Road is a website dedicated to study and awakening in formal practice. The form of study taken up here is the study group - unlike a class, study groups are continuous. Some participants might stay for years, and others for a few weeks.  In this way study groups are enjoyed as a continuous stream of coming and going.

Also unlike a class, there are no stated objectives. However, it is important that there be an etiquette. The etiquette is a way to establish shared intentions, and to encourage and support participation.

Most simply, the criteria for conversation in study groups are that the conversation stick closely to the text. This does not mean that it is not about daily practice and life , indeed one of the most fascinating things has been how relevant Buddhist texts can be in just this way. However, occasionally there will be the need to reground ourselves in the text with full awareness of our intention.

As individual study groups develop over time there may be requests for an etiquette that is specific to that group. Different material may require different approaches. When registering for a group, the requests that are specific to the group will be described along with the material to be covered.

It is our hope that this effort will inspire you in your practice! Currently offered are a Study Group on the teachings of Shunryu Suzuki and a Study Group on the teachings of Eihei Dogen.
